Practice 05 of 8
Zero Waste
Think before you toss — sort right, reduce, reuse, recycle.
Apply the 3Rs — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — to create less waste and get more value from resources.
Why it matters
Waste sent for disposal consumes landfill space and energy, and some types emit greenhouse gas as they decompose. Reducing waste at the source has a direct environmental effect.
The 3Rs start with Reduce — using less of what creates waste — then Reuse, and then Recycle through proper sorting. The more of the three we practice, the less waste we create and the more value we get from resources.
Do this today
Read and act immediately — no big programme required.
- Use fewer single-use items such as plastic cups and containers
- Bring your own cup and cloth bag to the office
- Use reusable containers and avoid single-use packaging
- Sort waste into the unit's correct bins: recyclables, organic, hazardous and general
- Turn organic waste — food scraps and vegetable peels — into compost or other uses
- Check before throwing away whether items can be reused or donated

Explain
Reduce
Think before you consume — use less of what creates waste, refuse unnecessary plastic bags, and choose products with less packaging.
Explain
Reuse
Use items again before discarding — containers, bottles and double-sided paper.
Explain
Recycle
Separate recyclables — glass bottles, paper, plastic and metal — so they can re-enter production.
Everyday Green Challenge
Today, sort every piece of waste before throwing it away — and check what could be reused or recycled instead.
Environmental impact
This practice connects to these performance dimensions:
- Waste management
