Practice 02 of 8
Energy Smart
Switch off what you don't use — use energy wisely.
Cut office electricity use with simple habits you can start today — lighting, air conditioning, computers and office equipment.
Why it matters
Electricity is one of the office's biggest costs, and most of it comes from fossil fuels that produce greenhouse gas. Using electricity wisely cuts both costs and environmental impact at the same time.
Energy is often wasted unnecessarily — lights left on all day, air conditioners set colder than needed, or equipment left plugged in after use. These small behaviour changes cost nothing and can start today.
Do this today
Read and act immediately — no big programme required.
- Switch off lights in unused areas
- Turn off screens and devices after use and unplug appliances not in use
- Set the air conditioner to the unit's guideline temperature and switch off when the room is empty for long periods
- Make the most of natural light where possible
- Check devices and lights before leaving the office

Fact
Lights left on are wasted energy
Switching off lights in empty areas is the easiest way to save energy with zero investment.
Fact
Air conditioning
Setting the air conditioner to the unit's guideline temperature — not colder than needed — reduces the load on the unit and saves energy.
Explain
Standby power
Printers, copiers and some office equipment still draw power in standby mode. Unplug or switch them off when not in use for long periods.
Everyday Green Challenge
Before going home today, check 4 things: lights, computer monitors, air conditioning, and power plugs.
